Spurs to host Guangzhou Loong Lions from China in preseason opener
San Antonio Spurs acting head coach Mitch Johnson, right, speaks with Spurs players Victor Wembanyama (1) and Stephon Castle (5) during the second half of their NBA basketball game against the Golden State Warriors, Saturday, Nov. 23, 2024, in San Antonio. The Spurs will host the Guangzhou Loong Lions of the Chinese Basketball Association on Oct. 6 as Johnson begins his first preseason as the team’s head coach.
The Spurs 2025-26 preseason schedule will kick off with a home game against a team from China and end with a home-and-home series against the Indiana Pacers.
Fans will get their first chance to see rookies Dylan Harper and Carter Bryant in action at the Frost Bank Center when the Spurs host the Guangzhou Loong Lions of the Chinese Basketball Association at 7 p.m. Oct. 6.
The game will mark the first time in franchise history the Spurs have played an exhibition game against a Chinese team and it comes after star center Victor Wembanyama spent a portion of his offseason in China, a vacation that included a week-plus stay at a Shaolin temple in Zhengzhou, China.
Wembanyama hasn’t suited up for the Spurs since he was diagnosed with a blood clot in his right shoulder shortly after he appeared in the 2025 NBA All-Star weekend in San Francisco. The 21-year-old Frenchman recently announced that the team has cleared him to return to full basketball activities.
The preseason opener will also mark the first game for the Spurs after an offseason changing of the guard. The team named Mitch Johnson as its full-time head coach after he spent the final 77 games of last season as acting head coach after Gregg Popovich suffered a stroke on Nov. 4.
The Spurs announced May 2 that Johnson would be the 19th head coach in franchise history and that Popovich would continue as president of basketball operations following 29 seasons as head coach.
The Spurs will face a more familiar foe in their second preseason game when they travel to Florida to take on the Miami Heat at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 8.
The third game will be against the Utah Jazz at 7 p.m. Oct. 10 at the Frost Bank Center. Harper, the No. 2 overall pick, undoubtedly will circle that date on his calendar after the Jazz drafted his former Rutgers teammate, Ace Bailey, fifth overall in June.

The schedule ends with a pair of outings against the defending Eastern Conference champion Pacers, who lost to Oklahoma City in the Finals. The Pacers will be without star guard Tyrese Haliburton after he suffered a torn right Achilles tendon early in Game 7.
The first game against Indiana is set for 6 p.m. Oct. 13 at Indianapolis’ Gainbridge Fieldhouse. The teams will meet again in the preseason finale at 7 p.m. on Oct. 17 in San Antonio.
Preseason tickets will go on sale at 10 a.m. Tuesday on Ticketmaster and Spurs.com. Broadcast information will be released at a later date, the Spurs said in a release.
The NBA will announce its 2025-26 regular season schedule later this month.
The Spurs finished with a 34-48 record last season. They will enter this season with a six-year playoff drought, the longest in franchise history.
